Kākā pōria

Maori Arts Gallery

Kākā pōria were traditionally used to hold young kākā around the leg to tame them and use them to snare other birds. Because of the fine details and technical knowledge required to make these, they often became valued family heirlooms and were passed down through generations. This taonga is hand carved by our Ngati Kahungunu carver.
